The Supports

What's HIPS?

High Impact Polystyrene: polystyrene with rubber added, used as a support that dissolves in limonene.

Meet HipsHips holds PETG prints up, then bows out in a citrus bath.

Nozzle 225–255 °C · Bed 100–110 °C

Prusa, for HIPS. Typical ranges from one maker’s data sheet. Brands differ: the label on your spool wins.

Why it matters

  • Its best use is as a soluble support. It is softer and lighter than ABS and shrinks much less.
  • Not for supporting ABS or ASA: limonene partly dissolves those too.

Tips from the workshop

  • A short soak loosens the supports; then remove them by hand.
  • After limonene, let the part dry for at least 24 hours.
  • Small contact area? Add a brim.
